Events for ST. MARTIN/SINT MAARTEN 2002

1st of January - New Year's Day - public holiday (both sides)

3rd of February - DHL Triple Fun Triathlon at Mullet Bay

Mid-February - Carnival on the French side of the island during the traditional five-day Mardi Gras period that ends on Ash Wednesday. It features the selection of a Carnival Queen, costume parades, dancing and music, mostly steel bands.

Ash Wednesday - French side - Black and White Jump-Up; night parade with torches.

1st to 3rd of March - Annual Sint Maarten Heineken Regatta. Competitions for racing yachts, large sailboats and small multihulls.

Mid to late Mi-Careme (Mid-Lent) - French side - Red and Black street parade - the red symbolizes the carnival spirit and the black symbolizes the mourning for the Lenten season.

24th of March - SMALTA Kid's Triathlon

13th -14th of April - Sint Maartan Open Golf Tournament

19th of April - 3rd of May - Carnival in Sint Maartan. It begins with the Balloon Jump-Up, the first of the "Jump-Up" parades that will wind their way through the streets until April 30th, the birthday of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. Competitions - and Calypso competitions in particular - are also an integral part of Carnival festivities. The grand finale to Carnival is the Last Lap Jump-Up, led by King Momo, the straw figure who reigns over Carnival. The burning of King Momo signals the end of Carnival - according to local legend, he takes the village sins with him, leaving the island pure.

End of June - Music and Cultural Festival

Early July - Calypso Music Festival; Miss Hibiscus Competition

21st of September - Moonlight Golf Tournament

1st to 4th of October - Belair Sprint Triathlon

Mid-November - Tour of St. Martin/Sint Maartan International Bicycle Race

11th of November - Annual Round the Island Relay Race
